After a three-year hiatus (due to pandemic restrictions) we're back in Sydney for the country's premier art fair, Sydney Contemporary!

We present the work of four artists with diverse practices based in Western Australia:

Alex Spremberg
With skilful prowess, Alex Spremberg pours, floods and manipulates liquid enamel and varnish directly onto the painting surface. The resulting artworks emanate from masterful input by the artist as he directs the interaction of the differing mediums to create paintings with rich non-referential abstraction.

Paul Uhlmann
A painter, printmaker and maker of artist books who is interested in philosophies of process and impermanence, Paul Uhlmann's large scale paintings depict elusive images that appear through oil on canvas – atmospheric clouds, smoke and birds.

Vanessa Russ
A Ngarinyin/Gija woman from the Kimberley region of Western Australia, country and cultural memory are the expansive territories traversed by Vanessa Russ’ expressive and uninhibited ink and charcoal drawings. Living far from where she grew up, she powerfully channels childhood memories of the rivers, gorges and flooded plains of her birth place in her dynamic artworks.

Andrew Nicholls
Engaging with the sentimental, camp, and other historically-marginalised aesthetics through his multi-faceted practice, Andrew Nicholls traces the historical recurrence of particular aesthetic motifs. At Sydney Contemporary he exhibits ceramic works from his 'Hyperkulturemia' series which was first shown at the Art Gallery of Western Australia in 2019. A selection of the porcelain busts and vases were made in collaboration with Jingdezhen artisans in Jiangxi Province, China.

The fair welcomes over 90 leading galleries, presenting the work of over 450 artists alongside an ambitious four day program of curated exhibitions, ground-breaking installations, performance art, tours and talks.
