Merrick Belyea, Mount Nameless View South West, 2025, oil on aluminium, 100 x 100cm
Merrick Belyea’s new Pilbara series is a meditation on the parallel mythologies that help make sense of human presence in a landscape that reveals its origins through exposed ores and worn‑down strata.
That these same rocks are now mined and alchemised on an industrial scale only deepens the evolving story of humanity’s relationship with the environment and the duality of inspiration and exploitation. The image of devouring the flesh of our own becomes an existential warning for how we navigate myth, metaphor and landscape.
