Paul Uhlmann at WA Shipwrecks Museum

We’re thrilled to share that artist member Paul Uhlmann is part of an extraordinary new exhibition at the WA Shipwrecks Museum in Fremantle, running from 28 November 2025 to 1 February 2026. First Encounters: Artist Interventions with the VOC Shipwrecks invites audiences to uncover untold stories of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) through art and archives, connecting global histories to local shores.

Paul’s work draws inspiration from the haunting 1629 Batavia shipwreck and the elaborate Baroque journal of Francesco Pelsaert. His artist’s book explores the tension between beauty and horror, weaving together motifs of impermanence and colonial power reminiscent of Dutch vanitas paintings. Through layered imagery of skeletal remains, flora and fauna, Paul creates a contemplative space to reflect on first encounters and their enduring impact.

Hear from the artists about their work at a special artist talk event on Sunday 30 November, 11am and 1pm.
