Joanna Lamb // Canberra Art Biennial 2022
Joanna Lamb exhibits new works for the 2022 Canberra Art Biennial
In 2013 I began an ongoing series of large-scale wall paintings called the ‘Pool’ paintings. These have been an experimentation with abstraction and objectification. The shape of the works is formed by the outline of a backyard pool and the image contained within is a reduced and abstracted representation of the environment it is reflecting. The pool may be seen as a symbol of summer freedoms and idealities. These moments however are always transitory just as the shimmering surface of the water is willing to be broken. The pools are intended to be temporary installations to be painted over and then recreated somewhere else. These works loosely reference the pools of David Hockney and Ed Ruscha’s own series ‘Nine Swimming Pools. The pool exhibited in contour 556 is Pool 3.
Pool 3 has been supported by DOMA Group.
Contour 556 is Canberra’s biennial public art festival, curated by Neil Hobbs.
Contour 556 is the water level of Lake Burley Griffin, which links the event in name as well as in purpose to the history of the central Canberra landscape. The artworks and installations selected for the festival respond in some way to Canberra’s history, from 50,000 years to the present day. contour 556 will therefore offer the Canberra, Australian and international community a unique opportunity to engage with and understand the layers of Canberra’s history through art.
