Paul Uhlmann // Collective Conversations 2020

Paul Uhlmann discusses his exhibition, 'Land of Smoke' with Andre Lipscombe on 12 June 2020 at the Art Collective WA gallery in Perth.

Paul's paintings of place, embodiment and impermanence recognise that vision is imperfect; that we struggle to see what is before us. The exhibition questioned how difficulties in perception continue to frame the way that Australia is understood, or at times misunderstood. When James Cook first encountered the 'Great Southern Land', he described it as a ‘continent of smoke’. Such a perceptive image is enduring but changes meaning through time.
